March 7, 2008

WordPress is a free blogging software that has support from a large community of users and developers. Since the recent development of blog it has found an array of use that includes; an online journal or a chronicle of events for teenagers putting their thoughts and ramblings online, enthusiasts providing free updates regarding personal interests and passion, professional bloggers and even big companies who use blogs as a tool for marketing strategy.

To set up a blog, one should have blogging software or a platform. There are various free software in the web and WordPress is one of those. WordPress is a free blogging software and is an open source software primarily supported by a huge community of users and developers with the aim of assisting both novice and experienced bloggers. Word press supports categories, pages and track backs and is constantly updated through the use of the main software as well as software plugins considered as an additional or bonus software elements. This can be used to take advantage of the basic functions of WordPress. To set up a WordPress blog, just head on over to wordpress.org. Instead of having the blog be done and hosted on WordPress.com, one has the option of installing WordPress on one’s own web host. With this, a user needs to have his own web hosting account preferably with a version of CPANEL which is an easy-to-use graphical control panel operates in managing a web host. Thus, setting up a WordPress blog includes 3 steps:

  1. Go to WordPress.org and download the WordPress installation files. Because it is an open source software, the installation is free. Use compressed format such as WinZip in order to expand one’s file in the hard disk.
  2. Next thing to do is to run the File Transfer Protocol program and connect to the web hosting account. Afterwards, upload the installation files to the domain and folder to where one wants the WordPress blog to be installed.
  3. The next step is quite complicated however, a user should then log on to the CPANEL of one’s web host. At this point one must create and configure the MYSQL database. Upon completion of this task, one needs to organize and configure various files for the installation to be completed.

The next thing to consider is by launching the browser in order to access one’s blog and this is the time where one can start making his/her first post by means of running the “wp-admin.php” script that has been installed.

This phase is usually the normal yet considered monotonous and dreary way of setting up one’s WordPress blog. However, this is all worthwhile and the amount of effort one extends is valuable. By doing so, a user can start configuring all facets of WordPress such as installing the topic preferred and can also add HTML codes to include Google AdSense on the blog if a user is also after additional profit and finding revenues to support and enhance a user’s blog.
