Photo sharing is publishing or transfer of users photo online though means of websites or online tools. The functionality basically depends on websites and tools that upload and display the images. The first photo sharing site were built in mid 90s when photo printing sites launched the service of online photo prints. But major photo sharing sites came into presence only after Web 2.0 boom.
Here we talk about major photo sharing sites created to help user share their photo in online world.
Flickr
Initially an independent website, Flickr was later bought by Yahoo! as its initiative to move in web 2.0 world. Now, Flickr user account can be integrated to that of Yahoo accounts making it world’s largest photo sharing site. Besides being a photo sharing site it also assist bloggers to use Flickr as photo repository.
Picassa
Picassa is a software application for organizing and editing digital photos, initially crated by Idea lab it was later bought by Google. An online version of Picassa is also available but its desktop version is rather more popular among the users.
Photobucket
It is an image and video hosting, slideshow creation and photo sharing website. Built by Alex Welch and Darren Crystal it got funding from Trinity Ventures. It is specially used for personal photo storage and uploading avatars and other small graphics files by webmaster. It offers 1 GB storage capacity extended to 5 GB and above for paid users.
Kodak EasyShare Gallery
Kodak EasyShare Gallery is a product from the makers of Kodak cameras. This site offers online printing and publishing facility of digital photos. It also has mobile interface so that users can view images on a mobile phone. It currently has a user base of 20 million and serves around 500 million photos.
Zoomr is a relatively low profile photo sharing site with a user base of around 50,000. It was created by Kristopher Tate of Blue Bridge Technologies Group in 2005. It is highly modeled after the interface of Flickr.
