My top ten blogging platforms

The top ten most famous and popular blogging tools are Moveable Type, Wordpress, Lyceum, Blogger, TypePad, Square Space, Radio Userland, Blog city, Livejournal and Xanga.

  1. Wordpress is another blog publishing software, this one is a lot more popular than most of the normal softwares. This software is written in PHP. Wordpress is developed by Matt Mullenweg. The latest version is 2.5, the features of this program is that there is a templating system, they support plugins, they have trackback and pingback. Your blog can have multiple authors and wordpress also can store a list of users that visit your blog and also blocking users that you do not want by their IP address. Wordpress also have many pre-made themes that you can use for your blog. Also includes a spell check, preview and autosave as well. This is a free program.
  1. Moveable Type is a free weblog publishing software that is used by bloggers. It came out on September 3, 2001. With Moveable type, a person may have unlimited weblogs and many other feature such as the TrackBack feature. This software was developed by the company named Six Apart and started by Ben Trott. Right now the newest version is the version 4.1. This software writes in Perl and supports the weblog’s data in many different type of SQL database.
  1. Lyceum is an open-source blogging software that is made based on the other blog publishing software “WordPress”. This one is not as popular but was made in February 2006. This software was developed by ibiblio. The features are alike with Wordpress but they allow multi-user and multi-blog enhancement. Basically this is a version of Wordpress that allows multi-blogging. They have added some extra features to the normal wordpress program. They have added smart administrative controls, easy to use installer and more.
  1. Blogger is another very popular blog publishing system. It was made by Pyra Labs and then Google had bought it in 2003. This program was launched on July 31st, 2000. If you already have a gmail account you will not need a new account to use blogger. If you do not have a gmail account, use another email address and you will also get a gmail account as well. You are allowed to have multiple blogs on this site. They have spell check, auto save and preview as well. No download required, everything in blogger is done on your browser so you can quickly post blog post anywhere you are. Blogger also supports different languages. This is a free program.
  1. TypePad is another blogging service by Six Apart. This was launched in October 2003 and was based on Six Apart’s other blog publishing software, Moveable Type. The only bad part about TypePad is that it is not a free program. With everything that Moveable Type had offered, there was more in this software. It is very easy to publish post and also customizing your blog’s theme. Also you can even make money from your blog. That’s something new and an advantage to this system. You are allowed to add Widgets as well and even add webpages.
  1. Squarespace is yet another blogging service. This blogging service is also a paying service as well. With $7 one get 0.5GB of storage and 6GB bandwidth. At $12, the storage doubles and bandwidth increase by 2GB. The highest is the $17 which gives 2GB and 10GB bandwidth per month. Only the highest level of the program allows multiple editors, both the $12 and the $17 allow up to 250 members. There are more that only the highest level offers but the lowest level is good enough for a normal blogger. Square space is owned by SquareSpace Inc, they are a private software company. The company was founded in 2003 by Anothy Casalena. This program is mainly managed by 4 different people.
  1. Radio Userland is yet another pay to use publishing program. After the 30 days trail you will have to pay $39.95 to continue using this program. You will have to download this program in order to use it. Radio Userland have 17 different themes to start your blog and have many of the same features as other publishing programs. Since Radio Userland is a downloaded program, one can edit their site while offline and then publish the changes when you are connected to the internet again. This program’s lead developer and designer is Dave Winer.
  1. Blog City is a five year old weblog publishing program. This is also a pay program. A personal account only cost from £2.50 a month and a business account cost £50. The team behind Blog-City also own and made BlueDragon which is the engine that powers MySpace. For a personal account you will only get 1 blog, 100MB of storage and 2GB bandwidth per month. This is pretty low compared to other blogs. For a personal account you are only allowed 2,000 entries / pages. They have some stuff that is only available to business accounts which cost from £50 a month.
  1. LiveJournal is not just a blog publishing service but also a community. Basically the members can make a blog, journal or even a diary. This program was started in March in the 1999 by Brad Fitzpatrick. Right now this service is owned by SUP. A special part is that each entry on this community has its own webpage. There is also a friend list. The user can customize their account with many different options such as avatars. This program is also free to join. This program is basically a community but it includes a blog.
  1. Xanga is another website that host weblogs, photoblog and social networking profile. The weblog service was added to Xanga sites on November 5, 2000. The Xanga was launched in 1998. This is somewhat like LiveJournal because it is also a community where you can meet other people. There is a photo section and a video section. There are many parts to Xanga. Also this program is not very different from LiveJournal except it is really blogs and not journals or diarys.
