Since the advent of Web 2.0 plethora of social networking sites have come and disappeared form the scene. But few sites did stick and are creating a new revolution in the industry. According to a survey every individual who uses internet today has an account on at least one social networking site which makes them hot property of internet. Some of the sites in this social networking niche have become more poplar than traditional web portal like Yahoo! or MSN. Here we talk about Top 10 social networking sites of our time:
With an estimated user base of 50 Million user base and around 56M unique hits per month is the most popular social networking site. It’s growth has been consistent since its start and has a majority of its user base from US schools and college. It has one easy to use interface which provides all the major facility required by a user in a social networking sites. It’s huge user base can be used to market your product as you can find it’s members classified into niche interest groups.
Facebook became increasingly popular when Microsoft bid to buy it in 2007. This site has one of the best security features for its members and was not available to public for a direct signup. Though now it allows anyone to signup but initially required a invitation from some one who already was its member.
Bebo is highly popular in UK and other European countries. With a user base of 2 billion, it is one of the major social networking sites. It has been relatively popular among the music industry people with great names creating their profile on Bebo.com
Hi5 has been a sensation among, Latin American and Asian teens. It has a user base of around 70 million and is open to almost all kind of people. The security in Hi5 can be issue as it lets anyone view profile of any user. Though steps have been taken to stop this but still it lacks many feature of a social networking site.
Orkut was bought by Google to increase its presence in the social networking industry. Initially an invitation only site later it opened up its door to anyone. It has been highly popular in Indian community with at least 17% user base from India. It can be operated with the same account of Google.com
Debuting a year ago from Myspace in 2002, Friendster is the first modern social networking site. Though later it was overtaken by Myspace in term of user base. Friendster still is going strong with its hold on major communities through out the world.
A general social networking site opened for anyone and a user base of 3 billion. It is said to be manipulating its user base to increase more users. It has a low moderation quality making in unsuitable for kids.
Linkedin is a social networking site built only for business people and professional. With a user base of 19 million, it is now one of the fastest growing communities which have good user interface and high class moderation and members. Though some of the features are paid but its worth paying to use them.
Some people even doubt that Yahoo too has its own social networking site. Since it is the least popular and somewhat differs in look from other social networking site. Though it can have a massive user base because its user account is linked with default Yahoo accounts.
Ning is a social network to crate your own social networking site. It allows its users to create their own community and collaborate with their own friends.
There are many others social networking sites too in industry but these 10 can be termed as Top 10 and the most popular of them.
